Citizens gathered in front of the courthouse greeted the Armenian Patriarch with chants of “Vehapar.” On August 7, the first session of the preliminary hearings in the case of Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians and six bishops, kicked off at the Echmiadzin residence of the Armavir Regional Court of General Jurisdiction. The judge recused himself.

After a joint prayer in the Mother Cathedral of St. Echmiadzin, the Patriarch of All Armenians addressed everyone.

The hierarchal sees of the Armenian Church, the dioceses of the Diaspora, and the AGBU Pan-Armenian organization have issued condemning statements calling on the Armenian authorities to stop the persecution of the Armenian Church and its patriarch.

The international press and human rights organizations have assessed the criminal prosecution of the Catholicos of All Armenians and six bishops as a violation of the fundamental right to religious freedom and the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia.

On August 7, after the first court hearing on the criminal case of His Holiness Karekin II, Catholicos of All Armenians, and six bishops who are members of the Supreme Spiritual Council, the Brotherhood of the Mother See and the faithful participated in the evening service at the Mother Cathedral, at the end of which His Holiness conveyed his blessing and message to those present: “My urge to all of you is to be sober and prudent, not to give in to provocations, deceitful intrigues, to remain strong in faith and hope, for God brings good things out of all evil realities and trials for His Holy Church and the faithful people. Our faith is also strengthened in tribulations.”
